Starting a travel blog is a great idea. Turning your travel blog into a revenue stream is an even better idea and I am going to show you some ways you can do exactly that.
As a fellow blogger and wanderer, I spend my time creating blog posts on my website while I travel. I blog full-time and live a free and fulfilling lifestyle. (I don’t travel blog, my blog is based on ways to make money.)
I understand how to blog is such a way that you can turn a hefty profit from anywhere in the world. Let me share with you ideas on how you can start your very own travel blog and make money.
How to start a travel blog
There are a few things we need to cover before we move into the making money aspect of travel blogging for money.
There is a simple process you will need to follow:
- Understanding your niche. (Travel is your niche and the audience you are looking to target.)
- You will need a website. ( Not a complex website but one that uses a content management system. I prefer WordPress.org since it is community sourced and free to use.)
- Attracting visitors to your blog. (You cannot make money from travel blogging without having visitors.)
- Earning revenue. (My favorite way to make money with blogging is by affiliate marketing. I will give you some ideas on products to affiliate market with your travel blog.)
These are the 4 steps we will cover today. I will break down each step as simple as possible for you to fully grasp how to travel blog for money.
Step 1: Understanding your niche audience of traveling
I think it is safe to say that you will be attracting visitors to your website who are interested in travel topics. The readers of your blog are going to be fellow travelers of the world. You will need to build trust with your visitors and build an expert reputation as a traveler.
Every month 4,304,561 people are searching for different topics about travel. There is a ton of potential to make money as a travel blogger.
If you can get 1% of this travel traffic to your blog a month, that is over 40,000 visitors. The more visitors to your blog, the more opportunity to make money.
Now you should understand how large of an audience travel can attract. Let’s move on to the next step before I cover how you will get all visitors to your website.
Step 2: Building your blog
Creating a website is not very difficult as long as you use a content management system. What a CMS means is that you will not have to understand HTML or any type of coding. WordPress is a very simple and user-friendly CMS to use.
Creating articles, posts, and pages within WordPress is very easy. If you can use Microsoft Office Word or Google Docs. then you will have no problem adding any type of text data to your WordPress website.
Adding posts and pages is simply done by clicking Add New and creating your new post.
Adding pictures, video, and any other type of data onto your blog is incredibly simple also. Basically, if you can upload a picture to ANY of your social media accounts, you can add visuals to your website with ease.
All you have to do is click Add Media which is right between the post heading and the post text.
Recommended travel blog features:
- White background with black text. This just makes it very easy for people to read.
- Easy to navigate. You will want to have a top menu and a sidebar menu. More places for people to click and stay on your blog for a longer period of time.
- Rapid load speed. The quicker your pages load the better the user experience is going to be.
- Professional look and design. This means choosing a color scheme that is not “over the top”. WordPress offers thousands of free website themes for you to choose from.
These attributes to your blog are to create a better user experience. This is a crucial step and one that needs to be done correctly in order to make sure your visitors want to come to your blog and more importantly, want to come back to your blog.
Step 3: Attracting visitors to your blog
The two main ways you are going to attract a ton of visitors to your website is by search engines and social media.
Social media is relatively simple, you will copy your URL and share it on any of your social media accounts for your friends, family, and followers to visit. (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, and so on) As this is self-explanatory, I am going to cover how to get visitors to your blog from search engines. (Google, Yahoo, and Bing)
Gaining traffic from search engines (SEO)
The most effective way to gain a ton of traffic to your blog is by having quality content. The type of content that someone who is a traveler is interested in reading.
Some quick ideas that would attract a travel audience are by creating posts such as:
- Best places to travel
- Places to visit in… (USA, China, Europe, Vietnam, India.)
- Things to do in… (country or city)
- How to be safe traveling
- How to experience the culture while traveling
- Must do activities while traveling somewhere
- Things to travel with
- Why you should travel
All of these are broad ideas but should help get you started. Each one of these ideas can be broken down a lot since there is a ton of great places to travel, see, and experience.
Before you create a new post or page, you will want to do keyword research. Keyword research means, what words are people typing into search engines. Adding those keywords into your post is going to help your post rank on the first page of search engines.
- Keywords – What people are typing into search engines.
- Avg. – A monthly number of searches.
- Traffic – How many visitors position #1 receives.
- QSR – Number of websites using those exact keywords.
- KQI – How easily you can rank for those keywords. Green is good, Yellow is okay. Red is Bad
- SEO – The higher the SEO number, the better you will rank right away.
The keyword tool I use and just demonstrated is Jaaxy. There are a lot of keyword tools online.
You want to create posts that will target specific keywords. Make sure the posts you create are revelent to what people are searching for.
As you can see, creating quality content on your travel blog is going to attract visitors but none of these posts are going to make you money. These types of posts are for attracting visitors. So, let’s get into how you will make money once you have a lot of visitors coming to your page.
Step 4: Getting Paid
The best way to make money as a blogger of any type is by affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is selling products you do not own. Online there are special programs called “affiliate programs” and you can sign up for free. Amazon has the largest affiliate program online but there are over 100,000 different affiliate programs.
When you join an affiliate program, you will be given a special link. When someone clicks that special link they will be redirected to the merchandiser’s website. If that person buys the product/service, you will earn a commission.
No inventory, No shipping, No customer support on your end.
As a travel blog, what type of products/services do travelers need?
- flights and other travel methods
- cameras – picture and video
- luggage – suitcases, backpacks, and other types of travel bags.
- personal care products
The list goes on and on. There are a lot of things you might need while traveling. What you can do is review all of these different types of products for your readers.
I call these your money pages.
Creating a post such as Best Cameras to Travel With.
This could be a list of cameras you recommend people buy for their travel adventures. It can be 1 camera all the way up to 100 different cameras. Just make sure you put YOUR affiliate link to buy each camera on that post.
- Camera XXX – $100 from Amazon – CLICK HERE TO BUY
You can do this for any type of product you reviewed that you think your blog visitors will need or want.
How will you convert all your traffic on your website to your money pages?
No matter what type of post you create on your blog, there is always going to be an opportunity to convert that visitor into buying something. As I did this earlier. I showed you a keyword research tool that I use and linked it back to a full review of that keyword tool. It is relevant to this post and something a blogger could need or want.
Continuing with the Camera Example:
Let’s say you created a new blog post about Must See Places in Indonesia
You can naturally discuss all the places to visit and see. At the end of the post, you could add a couple of sentences like this…
“These places in Indonesia are by far some of my absolute favorite and you have to get over there and check them out. The last thing you want to do is forget about the beauty of these places. I have created a post about the best cameras to travel with. Click here to check that out.“
Or you can be more direct and send traffic directly from that web page to a specific product.
“As a traveler, you want to capture every moment when you explore a new place. There is only 1 camera I recommend that is perfect for a traveler. Click here to buy XXX camera.“
The potential for how much money you make is dependent on how much traffic you can receive from your blog. The more articles you have on your website, the more opportunity you have to make money. As long as you are trying to convert traffic from your post to your money page.
There are other ways to make money by blogging such as putting ads on your website but I prefer affiliate marketing. Ads can ruin your website and make it look ugly. I prefer a clean and simple looking website.
