It all starts with what is typed into the search box. How are people going to find YOU on the web?
Researching keywords is one of the most important steps for search engine marketing. Choosing to use keywords for your website is either going to make your website stand out or get lost in the traffic of search results. Researching into your market’s keywords will show you which words are in demand, which words or phrases to use, and you will learn a lot more about your customer base.
Without an understanding of keywords, you may attract visitors to your website, but they may not be the quality visitors you want. With keyword research, you will be able to follow the demands of customers, changing market conditions, products and services in that market, and what people are actively searching for. You will be able to understand the motivation of the customer base in any niche you work in with keyword research.
Do Your Keywords Have Value?
Are the keywords people are searching for adding value to your website? We can predict how often people are searching for those keywords and how much competition in the marketplace there is with those keywords. With a keyword search tool, you can predict those exact amounts. But, a keyword search tool will not tell us how valuable those keywords are to our website. Will people searching those terms result in sales? Will people find your content useful to that particular search? Will the traffic from those keywords searches hold any value?
What we will need to do at this particular point is understand our own website, make a few educated hypotheses, test the market, and repeat. This is the classic web marketing formula. This is how you will find motivated and valuable traffic to your website. This formula is the most cost effective marketing system in the history of mankind.
Here is the process to understand your keywords value:
Step 1: Judge your website
Are the keywords you selected revelent to your website? Will people searching the keywords you selected find your website useful? Will the content be able to satisfy the needs of your visitor? Will this traffic result in financial gains or will this help your overal goal with your website? If you answered YES to all these questions contine to the next step.
Step 2: Search your own keywords in search engines
You will need to have an understanding of which websites are already ranked high with those keywords. Having an understanding of the competiton will show you how hard or easy it will be to become ranked in search engines based off those keyword results. Are there paid advertistments on the search engine results? If there are that is a highly valued keyword. It could also mean that keyword tends to convert into financial gains. There will be quality competition with keywords that convert to sales.
Step 3: PPC to test your keywords
If your website is not ranked for those keywords, you might want to test them with Google Adwords. Make sure to choose the exact match for your keywords. You will start a small campaign for 100-200 clicks on your website to see how well those keywords convert. Make sure to keep track of all the data collect throughout that campaign.
Step 4: Determine Value
Using the data you collected from your ad campaign, you can now find the value in your keywords. Let’s say out of 100 clicks from your website 4 resulted in a sale. Your total profit on the sale was $300. That means each visitor to your website would be valued at $3 each. (300/100). You would be able to see how profitable those keywords would be to your website and how much those keywords will cost you.
Keyword Long Tail Searches
Wouldn’t it be nice to be ranked #1 in all search engine results? Every time someone searches a broad topic your website pops up as the best result. If that were to happen, is that what you really want?
Top results that have been searched over 1,000 a day or even over 500 a day. Now, that would be a web presence. But in reality, those web searches are minuscule when compared to long keyword searches. Long tail keyword searches might only happen a few times a day, but when all the data is put together, you can see that these searches contain the vast majority of web related searches.
Long tail keywords convert in a higher number than board searches. Someone searching for “laptops” is just starting in the buying cycle. They are just beginning to do their research into that product. Rather someone searching for “Refurbished Macbook Air 11.6 inches” is ready to buy. They have done their research into buying a new laptop vs a refurbished and are now ready to purchase. Even if they are searching for a specific brand, model, or make they are much further along the buying cycle and much closer to purchasing.
As you can see, choosing long tail keywords are going to result in a much higher conversion rate. Market researchers have studied the process of consumers online. If you can be found when consumers are searching long tail keywords, people will most likely buy from you. This is the stage of the buying cycle you will want to be found in.
