If you work from home part-time, full-time, or run your own business from home, these tips will help you maximize your effects to further your productivity at home.

Working from home can be very rewarding. It can also derail you from working to your full potential. If you follow some of my tips, you will increase the amount of work you achieve at home.

Not having to commute to work every day is an amazing thing. If you want to work from home, then you need to be able to work effectively.

Let’s dive right into these 15 work from home tips.


1.) Get Dressed.

When you wake up in the morning you should keep the same routine as you would if you had to go into the office. Wake up, eat breakfast, stretch, have a coffee. A simple trick that will help your productivity at home will be shower and change your clothes. The clothes you put on at home do not have to be dressy, but changing your clothes and getting ready for the day with fresh clothes will help you get your day started.

2.) Daily Tasks.

Working from home can be tough, you may get distracted from time to time. If you start each day laying out the daily tasks you wish to accomplish, this will help you stay productive and motivated. You are going to have a much more flexible schedule at home. If you can plan your work day accordingly and set out goals to accomplish each day. You will be very successful working from home.

3.) Use the cloud.

Save all your work related files to the cloud, Dropbox, or Google drive. You will work from home or really anywhere you wish too. If all your files are saved in a cloud you will never have to worry about forgetting work files when you travel. This will come in very handy when you wish to work from a different location for the day or on the road.

4.) Do not let friends stop by.

As you work from home, it may be easy to let a friend or family member stop by. When they do, you will be distracted from your daily tasks. Have your friends or family call first to see if it is a good time to come by. Having boundaries for your friends and family when you work from home will help keep you focused on your work at home.

5.) Work from a different location.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is to leave your home. Working from home having the same surroundings can be dreadful. A simple trick that will help you when you feel this way is to move your work location. You can head to a local coffee shop where there is free wifi and work from there for the day. If you use the cloud, all you will need to do is bring your laptop with you.

6.) Create your own office space.

You can turn any room in your home into a simple work office. This can be a bedroom, living room, or dining room. This way at home you know where to go when you want to work. When you are in that workspace, you will be able to get your work done. This will have a tax benefit also. The square footage of the room will be tax deductible.

7.) Set your work hours.

Your schedule at home is going to be much for flexible at home than in an office. This is a good and bad thing. The best thing you can do for yourself is set your own working hours. You can decide to work in the morning, take the afternoon off, then work in the evening as well. Or maybe you work the normal hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., either way having working hours will help keep you focused each day.

8.) Act like you are not at home.

Home is where we all usually will get our living tasks done, whether it is cleaning or cooking. Or if we are home we use the time for leisure. The best thing you can do is pretend you are not home. Don’t put on the television with a program you want to watch. You need to act the way you would if you were in the office. You can do this by forgetting about the leisure activities you typically enjoy at home.

9.) Don’t schedule nonwork-related appointments during your work hours.

It can be easy to schedule doctor or dentist appointments during the work hours you selected for yourself. You need to limit these disruptions from your work schedule by setting the for the beginning of the day or the end of the day. The less time you waste with setting appointments that are not work related the more you will get done work-wise.

10.) Enjoy your flexibility.

You work from home sometimes you need to take advantage of this. If your mind is wandering and not focusing on tasks, then take a break. Go for a walk, run, or bike ride. You are working from home why not use this to your advantage to keep your mind dialed in. Sometimes the best thing to do is walk away and take a break.

11.) Enjoy the disruptions.

You do not want to have these every single day, but when they do happen enjoy the moment. This is a huge benefit of working from home. When a friend or family member does stop by, be in the moment and enjoy it. Just be disciplined to get back to work for a long period of time after. You will be happy to have these disruptions with your work.

12.) Stay out of the kitchen.

Snacking can be very hard thing to avoid, but it will make you better when you avoid it. Stay away from going into the kitchen and looking for a snack every hour. Along with setting your work hours, set your own breaks and meal times. You know when you need to take a break to eat lunch or dinner.

13.) Buy noise canceling headphones.

This is big for when speaking with clients, bosses, or staying focused. When you work from home you want to keep the appearance of professionalism with all the people you conduct business with. The last thing you want is for them to hear a doorbell or sirens in the background when on a call or online meeting. Also, if you live with your family or roommates, this will help you be less distracted from the noise other people in your home will make.

14.) Stay connected through technology.

You want to keep in contact with your coworkers or boss. You can call and check in multiple times a day or you can use web-based technology to create groups for everyone to hang out with during your work hours. Joining an online community with people who are also working from home will help you stay connected as well.

15.) Stay away from online distractions.

It can be easy to open up Facebook or any other social media. The best thing to do is remove them from your web browser icons so you are less tempted to check. Youtube videos will kill your productivity. It is too easy to find a video, then another, then another and you have spent the last hour watching nothing but Youtube videos. Limit yourself to social media distractions.

    I work from home and struggle with distractions, I have a nearly 2 year old son and he can get quite vigorous! 🙂
    Working at home also requires self discipline, responsibility and self motivation because there is no one to stand over you and encourage you to work harder or faster or to be more productive. One should definitely create a routine as if they were going to work (outside the home) like you mention otherwise you will get sloppy, to comfortable and most of all UNPRODUCTIVE! Although I am not naturally a person of routine but do recognize its importance when it comes to WFH.

  2. Phenomenal actionable tips for working from home here all in one place. I 100% agree with every one of them, although I do lapse in the “get dressed” department. Often times I sit in my Jimmy Jams while working and I must admit, sometimes I don’t take a shower right away. I just can’t wait to get to it, you see. lol.

      I understand you are eager to begin the day! Maybe try waking up a few minutes earlier. I really do think taking a shower before you begin will really benefit you. especially since you are so eager to work. I suspect it will only benefit you even more!

  3. There are some great tips here. It try to adopt these but I fail on a couple. I need to be more strict with my working hours and work from a different location once in a while. Interesting point about getting dressed. I dress depending on the tasks at hand for the day. Glad I´m not on my own in doing this 🙂

      Isn’t that sometimes nice though having flexible hours? at least if you have somewhat of a routine I think you’d see benefits. Of crouse taking breaks is a must! You are definitely not alone here. I don’t always follow these exact tips down to the wire!
